Mesa Verde National Park

This was amazing!
Pueblo Indians (1300 AD)
This community supported 80-150 people for
around 100 years. They farmed the TOP of this mesa
and climbed down into their cliff palace which was hundreds
of feet above the canyon floor. This palace had
about 150 rooms, living rooms, ceremonial rooms,
bedrooms, and storage (granaries) rooms.

original "painted" plaster on the walls

storage rooms on the top shelf

Missing wall but you can see the smoot stains from
the fires back then.

a kiva (living room) built with a fireplace
and air shafts for ventilation.
The rectangle stone is a deflection stone so the draft
wouldn't put out the fire but instead circulate around the circular room.

Original pictrograph (painted) on the wall inside one
of the tower rooms.

Our kids were troopers for the hike, ladder climbing
and the heat.

we learned how they stripped the yucca planted and
wove it into ropes, snares, and sandals.
Of course, we had to strip our own!
